GUILFORD'S ADAMS LANDS FOOTBALL ALL-AMERICA LAURELS
Greensboro, NC (12/13/04) -- Christian Adams became Guilford College's second two-time football All-American in school history Monday when he received second-team honors on Don Hansen's Football Gazette NCAA Division III 2004 All-American Team. Adams, a punter, received Second Team College Sports Information Directors All-America honors last year and joins Steve Musulin '76 as the Quakers' only multiple football All-Americans.
Select Division III sports information directors from around the country selected this year's 78 honorees from a record 693 nominees.
A
5-9, 165-pound senior, Adams earned First Team Football Gazette 2004
All-South Region honors and last month became Guilford's first student-athlete
to receive back-to-back First Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC)
football laurels since 1997. He led the league's punters for the third straight
season this fall with a 41.2-yards per kick average, the second-best figure in
NCAA Division III through games of Dec. 11. Adams kicked 63 times for
2,595 yards with a long boot of 64 yards against Washington and Lee Oct. 23. He
placed 16 punts inside the opponent's 20-yard line and forced three fair
catches. The 2004 Football Gazette Preseason All-American averaged over 40 yards
per kick in six games and had 10 punts of 50 yards or more.
Adams set the ODAC record with a 40.14 career punting average and the Quakers' career standard with 188 punt attempts. He set the Guilford season record and ranked fourth in Division III with a 41.6-yard punting average in 2003.
Coach Mike Ketchum's Quakers finished the season with a 1-9 record (1-6 ODAC). Guilford expects 48 letter winners back in 2005.
