GUILFORD'S ADAMS NAMED TO PRESEASON ALL-AMERICA FOOTBALL TEAM
Greensboro, NC (07/15/04) -- Guilford senior Christian Adams (St. Cloud, FL/St. Cloud) earned a spot on Don Hansen's Football Gazette 2004 NCAA Division III Preseason All-America Third Team Thursday. The lone Guilford student-athlete recognized, Adams was one of six Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) players honored on the three teams selected by a panel of Division III sports information directors from around the country.
A
5-9, 160-pound punter, Adams received Second Team College Sports
Information Directors Division III All-America honors in 2003. He became
Guilford's first All-America punter since Tony Swainey '75 captured
NAIA All-America laurels in 1974. Adams led the ODAC for the second
straight season and ranked fourth in Division III with a school-record
41.6-yard average last year. He also earned Second Team Football Gazette
All-South Region and First Team All-ODAC honors. Adams placed 22 of
66 punts inside the opponents' 20-yard line with four fair catches and
three touchbacks. He kicked 13 punts of 50 or more yards and six of 60
yards or more, including a 76-yard boot against Ferrum, which ranks second
in Guilford history. He averaged over 40 yards per kick in nine of 10
contests, including the October 4 matchup with Greensboro where he
averaged 45.1 yards on nine punts. Adams' 41.6-yard average stands
third in ODAC history and broke Guilford's 39-year-old school record.
Coach Mike Ketchum's Quakers posted a 2-8 overall record in 2003, 1-5 in the ODAC. Adams and 40 other letter winners from last year's team return August 16 for preseason workouts. Guilford opens its 99th college football season September 11 at Methodist.
