GUILFORD ADDS SHANARD SMITH TO FOOTBALL COACHING STAFF
Greensboro, NC (02/05/04) -- Guilford College Athletic Director Marion Kirby announced the appointment of Shanard Smith as an assistant football coach Thursday. Smith will serve as the defensive coordinator on head coach Mike Ketchum's staff, assuming the defensive responsibilities Ketchum held for the past two years.
Smith
spent the 2003 season as the secondary coach, pro liaison and football
academic advisor at Division I-AA Elon, his alma mater. A four-year starting
free safety for the Phoenix, Smith helped Coach Al Seagraves' staff in
its first season of Southern Conference membership. Elon posted a 28-16 overall
record in Smith's playing career, including a 9-2 mark in 1999. He earned
the team's 1999 Dunlap Award, which is given annually to Elon's top defensive
back. The Phoenix finished seventh in the nation in total defense in 1999 and
placed 20th in the 1999 Sports Network NCAA I-AA Football poll. The Augusta, GA,
native earned a spot on the 2000 American Football Coaches Association Good
Works Team for his efforts on the field and his dedication to community service.
He won Elon's 2001 Browne Memorial Sportsmanship Award and ended his career with
201 tackles and nine interceptions. Smith, who presided over Elon's
Student-Athlete Advisory Council, graduated in 2001 with his bachelor's degree
in human services and a minor in criminal justice.
Smith started his coaching career in 2001 as a defensive backs coach at Randolph-Macon, one of Guilford's Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) rivals. The Yellow Jackets went 10-10 in his two years on Coach Scott Boone's staff and led the league in total defense in 2002. Smith coached Randolph-Macon cornerback Bobby Akers, a D3Football.com honorable mention All-American and First Team All-ODAC pick in 2001. One of his recruits, receiver Clay Muench, earned the 2002 ODAC Rookie of the Year Award.
Guilford's football team posted a 2-8 overall record in 2003, 1-5 in the ODAC. The Quakers expect 52 letter winners back in 2004. Guilford is an NCAA Division III institution.
