GUILFORD'S NEWKIRK NAMED ODAC DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Greensboro, NC (10/27/03) -- The Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) selected Guilford College junior Delvin Newkirk (Wallace, NC/Rose Hill) as its Defensive Football Player of the Week for games of October 25, the league announced Sunday. Newkirk, Guilford's second recipient of the award this season, received the award for the first time in his career.
A
5-11 250-pound defensive lineman, Newkirk made a season-high seven
tackles (5 solo) and a career-high three sacks in the Quakers' 34-7 win over
Washington and Lee Saturday. His three sacks were the most by a Guilford player
since 1999, when Sean Glarner '00 had three sacks against Hampden-Sydney.
Newkirk also forced two fumbles, one of which was recovered by Mario
Paylor and returned for a touchdown in the fourth quarter. He also broke up
a pass and hurried the quarterback three times.
Newkirk leads the Quakers with four sacks, and ranks fifth in the league with 0.57 sacks per game. He also leads the Quakers with 12.5 tackles for loss, which ranks third in the league. Newkirk stands fourth on the Quakers with 37 tackles.
