HAMPDEN-SYDNEY SCORES 38-0 ODAC WIN OVER GUILFORD
Hampden-Sydney, VA (09/28/02) -Hampden-Sydney sophomore running back Chris Gould (Roanoke, VA/Cave Spring) rushed for four touchdowns and the Tigers' defense limited Guilford to 212 total yards in a 38-0 victory in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football action Saturday. The win moves the Tigers to 3-0 (1-0 ODAC) for the first time since 1976.
After a scoreless first quarter, Hampden-Sydney broke loose for three TDs
in the second quarter. Gould netted
his first of the afternoon on a one-yard rush at the 9:10 mark, while senior Brandon
Hamlett (Lynchburg, VA/Heritage) caught
a 16-yard pass just two minutes later to put the Tigers up, 14-0.
Just under two minutes remaining before the half, Hampden-Sydney's Ryan
Still (Salem, VA/Glenvar) broke
through to block a Guilford (1-3, 0-2 ODAC) punt at the Quaker 32 yard-line.
That set up a seven-yard Gould
rush
with 1:28 to play, putting the Tigers up 21-0 at the break.
Senior kicker Doug
Van Der Mallie (Jacksonville, FL/Episcopal) booted
a career-best 38-yard field goal with 4:15 to play in the third quarter, while
Gould scored twice more in the fourth to ice the game. Gould's
first TD of the fourth came on a one-yard blast on fourth-and-goal with 8:40
remaining in the game. A Quaker
fumble at the Hampden-Sydney five-yard-line gave the Tiger offense another
chance to strike. This time, Gould
broke through three tackles on his way to a 53-yard scamper, scoring his fourth
touchdown of the contest.
Overall, Hampden-Sydney's offense rolled up 365 yards, led by Gould
who
rushed 14 times for a game-high 80 yards. Hampden-Sydney senior quarterback Mac
Russell (Selma, AL/Morgan Academy) was
17-of-34 on the day for 192 yards and one TD, while junior wide-out Conrad
Singh (Ft. Washington, MD/Gonzaga) caught
10 passes for 87 yards, giving him 31 receptions in three games.
Defensively, the Tigers racked up six sacks, picked off two passes,
blocked a punt and recovered a fumble. Hampden-Sydney
limited the Quakers to 32 rushing yards on 38 attempts.
Sophomore linebacker Daniel
Park (Richmond, VA/Fork Union) led
the way defensively, recording eight tackles, including a six-yard sack.
Senior Ryan
Kulinski (Sterling, VA/Broad Run) netted
seven tackles and racked up his third sack of the season.
Chris
Scott (Virginia Beach, VA/Ocean Lakes) and
Dick Scott (Dry
Fork, VA/Tunstall) each
picked off a pass for the Tigers.
Senior running back Brandon
Lockhart (Roxboro, NC/Person) recorded
a season-high 69 rushing yards, while senior Oren
Robinson (Anderson, SC/Westside) caught
five passes for 80 yards to lead Guilford's offensive attack.
Guilford's Wes
Kidd (Southport, NC/South Brunswick)
recorded a game- and career-high 14 tackles to lead the Quakers defense.
Senior safety J.J.
Edwards (Mims, FL/Astronaut (Concord)) and
junior cornerback Sherod
Long (Ruffin, NC/Bartlett-Yancey) each
picked off passes for the second straight game.
Senior Jason
Randazzo (Amston, CT/Suffield, Academy) also
recorded an interception for the Quakers.
Hampden-Sydney returns to action on Saturday, October 5, as the team
travels to Bridgewater, VA, to take on defending ODAC Champion and second-ranked
Bridgewater at 1 pm. The Quakers
will next play in the sixth-annual Soup Bowl against Greensboro College on
Saturday at 1 pm at Guilford.
