Football - Guilford College
The Quakers' football team placed 17 students on the Guilford College Fall Student-Athlete Honor Roll, which is comprised of student-athletes who maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or higher for the semester. In addition, five football student-athletes earned dean's list recognition. The football team's honor roll members are: Misha Braja, Markas Brunson, David Clark, Fernando Cruz, Ricky Douglas, Luis Glean II, Tumba Kanku, Triston Kyle, David LaPlaca, Cody Latimer, Donte' Mitchell, Justin Parker, Adam Pigg, Aaron Thomas, Luke Vandall, Chris Ward and Jordan West.
Former Guilford football coach and athletic director Herb Appenzeller will be inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame this May. Guilford placed five student-athletes on the All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) football team and Daniel Biggerstaff won the league's Rookie of the Year according to a vote of ODAC head football coaches. Senior defender Markas Brunson was a first-team pick. Junior Justin Parker, freshman Brad Scott, sophomore Kenneth Hyman III and senior Richie Paul were second-team honorees. Greensboro College announced the forfeiture of two 2009 football games Nov. 20, including the season-opening Soup Bowl contest with Guilford. As a result of the decision, the Quakers were credited with a victory in the game and officially finished the 2009 campaign with a 4-6 record (2-4 ODAC).
Guilford mourns the passing of Billy Watkins, Sr., father of junior quarterback Billy Watkins, after a battle with cancer. Burlington Times-News writer Bob Sutton profiled the younger Watkins and how he dealt with the difficult loss during the season. Click here for the story.
