Stuart T. Maynard Fund

COACH MAYNARD IS 91!
So many lives were touched by Coach Maynard. Help us honor him by supporting our Stuart T. Maynard Fund. Our goal is to break ground in the summer of 2009 and open a facility on Guilford College’s Homecoming on September 26, 2009. All those who played for Coach Maynard will be invited to attend this historic day when we rightfully place Coach Maynard’s name in the Armfield Athletic Center facility.

Stuart “Rock” Maynard
Stuart “Rock” Maynard ’43 served Guilford College and its students for 33 years in numerous capacities, most notably as the Quakers’ head baseball coach from 1952-1984. His teams enjoyed great success on the field and Stuart Maynardhe has received many honors, but Stuart is best known for his caring leadership that has impacted innumerable lives.

Maynard came to Guilford in 1940 from Harnett County, N.C., and played baseball and football for the Quakers. He captained both teams in 1942 and was named the school’s Best Senior Athlete. After graduation, he married his college sweetheart, Ruth, and served two years as a chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy. Maynard started coaching in 1947 at Williamston (N.C.) High School and took the football team to the 1950 state title.

The following year, Maynard accepted President Clyde Milner’s invitation to return to his alma mater as athletic director, director of physical education, head football coach and head baseball coach. Herb Appenzeller arrived in 1956 as head football coach and athletic director, but Maynard remained on the football staff as one of Appenzeller’s assistants for six years. He remained the director of physical education for 21 years and maintained a full teaching load. Maynard earned his master’s degree from UNC Chapel Hill largely by taking summer classes.

Maynard’s baseball teams enjoyed unprecedented success in the 1960s, which resulted in a number of team and personal awards. He was named the NAIA National Baseball Coach of the Year after guiding the 1966 Quakers to a 25 wins and the first NAIA Baseball World Series berth. Maynard won the Carolinas Conference Coach of the Year prize a year later and won four District 26 Coach of the Year prizes in his career. Guilford returned to the NAIA World Series in 1976, which led to Maynard’s receipt of the Professional Baseball Scouting Association’s Coach of the Year Award.

A member of the NAIA Baseball Hall of Fame, Maynard was inducted to the Guilford College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1970. He coached 11 Guilford students who signed professional baseball contracts and three All-Americans. The Quakers’ baseball team was 436-394-4 in Maynard’s 33-year tenure. He holds Guilford records for most baseball coaching wins and years of service. Maynard received the 1982 Alumni Excellence Award for outstanding achievement.

CASE FOR SUPPORT
Despite these wonderful accomplishments, Coach Maynard’s name does not appear anywhere on or near the Armfield Athletic Center’s football or baseball fields. We want to change that situation.

In honor of Coach Maynard Guilford College wants to develop the Stuart T. Maynard Fund. Dollars from this new fund would be directed to projects directly related to the baseball and football programs at Guilford College. To date two projects have been identified as worthy of Coach Maynard’s contributions to the college and the Athletic program. Both projects would bear his name.

FIRST OPTION - BATTING CENTER

The area between the baseball and football fields could be greatly enhanced with a new batting center. This open air facility would allow baseball players to hit and field during in climate weather. Team, recruiting and storage rooms are also part of this project. This facility would be a major boon to recruiting and would put our facility on par with many others in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC).

ESTIMATED PRICE: $400,000

SECOND OPTION - PRESS BOX

Another option to honor Coach Maynard’s legacy is to construct a press box on top of the third base dugout. Most ODAC colleges have a place where game announcing is done and now where internet broadcasts can happen. The location is necessary to avoid interference with the new seating arrangements behind home plate.

ESTIMATED PRICE: $150,000
