Game 1

Game 2

GREENSBORO, N.C. (2/19/09) - Guilford College split a nonconference double-header with visiting Southern Virginia University Thursday afternoon on the Quakers' McBane Field. Left-hander Michael Edstrom tossed a complete-game five-hitter with six strikeouts in the Knights' (2-5) 6-2 opening-game win. Josh Sumler's RBI grounder broke a 6-6 tie in the nightcap and Trey Daniel threw two scoreless innings for his first save as the Quakers (5-2) won the nightcap, 8-6.

Grant Woods' one-out single in the fifth inning of the opener broke a 2-2 tie and gave Edstrom all the space he needed to finish the Knights' second win of the season. The Quakers combined for two runs and four hits in the first two innings before Edstrom settled down to retire 15 of the 16 batters of the game. Brandon Miller had a two-run, pinch-hit single in Southern Virginia's three-run seventh inning.

Jay CoxGuilford recorded five runs thanks to seven straight hits in the first inning of the nightcap off of Knights' starter Darrell Brown. Drew Gurkin and Kyle Wooden both delivered RBI singles, followed by Will Cornelius' run-scoring double. Drew Ward and Jay Cox (pictured) also had RBI hits in the inning.

Quakers' starter Corey Landis took a one-hitter into the fourth inning before the Knights took advantage of a Guilford error and scored four runs (one earned) in the fourth inning. The Knights tied the game on Drew Ludwig's two-out, two-run triple in the fifth off of Guilford reliever Zach Daw (1-0), who earned his first college win.

Guilford answered with two in the bottom of the fifth to regain the lead. Southern Virginia made two errors in the inning, so none of the runs allowed by Robert Garrett were earned.

Alex Starbuck, Gurkin, Cornelius and Cox all finished the day with two hits and an RBI. Ludwig and Justin Eggers both had two hits for Southern Virginia.

Guilford hosts Case Western Reserve this weekend for four games, beginning with a noon double-header on Saturday (2/21) at McBane Field.
