Guilford's Alex Starbuck Wins Academic Honor
Greensboro, N.C. (5/7/09) -- Guilford College's Alex Starbuck earned Second Team ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III baseball honors Thursday from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). CoSIDA members nominated and selected the academic all-district teams.
The all-district squads are comprised of softball student-athletes from Division II and III institutions in the five-state area from Virginia to Florida. Nominees were starters or important reserves of sophomore academic standing or above who maintained at least a 3.3 grade point average.
A 5-10, 170-pound left fielder, Starbuck enjoyed the finest of his three seasons as a Guilford starter. He ranked fourth on the Quakers in hitting with a .351 batting average and led the team with three triples. His career-high seven homers stood second on the club and his personal-best 36 RBIs ranked third. Starbuck topped the team and ranks fourth in the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) through games of May 6 with 21 walks. His 183 plate appearances also place fourth in the league. He had 18 multi-hit games and 11 contests with at least two RBIs. Starbuck enters his senior year with a .311 batting average and 33 doubles, which ranks seventh among Guilford's career leaders.
A dean's list psychology major, Starbuck is a two-time Academic All-ODAC honoree and five-time member of the Guilford Student-Athlete Honor Roll. The student marshal earned selection to the ODAC's Sportsmanship Team in 2008 and was inducted into Guilford’s Scholarship Society this spring.
Fourth-year head coach Nick Black's '02 club posted a 19-19-1 record, the Quakers' best since 2006. Guilford set the school record for team batting average (.348) and may return as many as 24 letter winners for the 2010 campaign, including Starbuck.
