CHAD BOONE NAMED GUILFORD STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Greensboro, NC (3/27/06) -- Chad Boone batted .636 with a home run, six runs batted in (RBI) and five runs scored in Guilford's five baseball games last week to win the school's Student-Athlete of the Week Award Monday. The award is presented by Guilford's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and includes competition from March 20-26.
Boone,
a junior right fielder, hit a go-ahead two-run double with two outs in the
bottom of the seventh inning of Guilford's 6-4 loss to Tufts March 20. He went
two-for-two as a pinch-hitter against Tufts, including the double that made the
score 2-1. Two days later, he hit two-run homer, stole a base and scored two
runs as he went one-for-three from the plate in the Quakers' 19-0 win over Penn
State-Fayette. In Saturday's double-header against Old Dominion Athletic
Conference (ODAC) rival Emory & Henry, Boone went a combined four-for-six
with two RBI and three runs scored as Guilford swept the Wasps, 13-4 and 9-0.
Boone ranks second on the team with three stolen bases and has a .309 batting average this season with 25 hits, 14 RBI and 16 runs scored. He is hitting .444 over his last 12 games and is riding a five-game hitting streak.
Coach Nick Black's Quakers take on Southern Virginia for the second time this season Tuesday at 6:00 p.m. at Hooker Field in Martinsville, VA. Guilford won the first meeting between the two teams Feb. 24, 6-2.
Guilford's SAAC is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among student-athletes and non-student-athletes on the campus. Other recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive to benefit local charities and dodgeball competitions among representatives from Guilford's administration and athletic teams.
