PHIL DREW NAMED GUILFORD STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Greensboro, NC (2/22/06) -- Phil Drew batted .429 with a homer and six RBI in Guilford's three baseball games last week to win the school's Student-Athlete of the Week Award Wednesday. The award is presented by Guilford's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) and includes competition from Feb. 13-19.
Drew,
a redshirt-sophomore outfielder and catcher, hit a three-run double with two out
in the bottom of the seventh inning of Guilford's 10-8 comeback win over Averett
Feb. 15. The hit tied the game at 8-8 and set the stage for Mike Chelenza's
game-winning homer that scored Drew a batter later. Drew went
two-for-four versus Averett with a double, three RBI and a run scored. He had a
season-high three hits the following day in Guilford's 11-3 home win over
Montreat. Drew blasted his first triple and homer of the year and plated
three runners in the Quakers' third consecutive win. He went one-for-five with a
run scored in Guilford's 7-6 loss to nationally ranked Ferrum Feb. 19.
Drew has the Quakers' third-highest batting average (.381) and leads the team with seven RBI through five games. He has a hit in each contest and ranks second on the club with eight hits and five runs scored.
Coach Nick Black's Quakers continue their nine-game home stand Friday against NAIA-foe Southern Virginia at 2:15 p.m. Guilford hosts Bluefield State Saturday at noon in two seven-inning games.
Guilford's SAAC is comprised of representatives from each of the school's 16 varsity teams. The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and seeks to build community among student-athletes and non-student-athletes on the campus. Other recent Guilford SAAC activities include a canned-food drive to benefit local charities and dodgeball competitions among representatives from Guilford's teams.
