GUILFORD SPLITS DOUBLE HEADER WITH VIRGINIA WESLEYAN
Virginia Beach, VA (4/22/06) -- Guilford and Virginia Wesleyan split an
Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) doubleheader Saturday in the Quakers'
regular-season finale.
Guilford won the opener on Joe John's
two-run single in the top of the seventh that broke a 3-3 tie. The Marlins
scored their fourth unearned run of the game in the bottom of the seventh, but
Guilford's Dave Whighan rung up Aswin Dhramapitaksook for his ninth
strikeout to end the game.
Ian Spector paced the Quakers with two
hits, including a double. Guilford's Jeff Arzonico went 1-3 with an RBI
and a run scored.
Matt Hudgins paced Virginia Wesleyan with a 2-3
showing with two RBIs. Ricky Allred also had two hits and two RBIs. Chris Rivera
(2-5) pitched the seventh inning and took the loss.
Hudgins and Rivera starred in the second game as
Hudgins' two-run single in the bottom of the ninth scored two runs and gave the
Marlins a 5-4 win in the nightcap. Hudgins' hit was the third straight single of
the frame off of Guilford relievers Scottie Wilcox and Joe Overby
(0-3). A passed ball also helped the Marlins.
Hudgins finished with two hits in four at bats
and three RBIs. Brent Vuyovich went 3-4 and had two of the Marlins' four stolen
bases in the game. Rivera threw a scoreless ninth inning for the win.
Mike Chelenza went 2-3 with a double and
an RBI for Guilford. Ricky Seabolt also had two hits, including his
team-leading 15th double of the year, one shy of the school record.
Guilford and Virginia Wesleyan will play in the
ODAC Baseball Tournament April 27-30 in Lynchburg, VA. Tourney pairings will be
announced Monday.
