      DEMOREST, GA (2/10/06) -- The Piedmont College baseball team opened the 2006 campaign tonight at Loudermilk Field with a 6-0 shutout over visiting Guilford College. The Lions scored six unanswered runs and tallied eight hits en route to victory.

 

      Senior Billy Secor recorded six strikeouts and scattered five hits in the complete game shutout allowing only three runners to reach second base. Second baseman Walker Searcy recorded six assists and first baseman Mike Santowski recorded 13 putouts including a pair of web gems.

 

      In the first inning Cole Spedale stole home with two outs to give the Lions an early lead. In the second Justin Oates and Spedale recorded RBI singles to give Piedmont a 3-0 lead. The Lions scored in the third on a two out triple and RBI for Searcy and again in the fourth on a Santowski RBI single. Piedmont added an insurance run in the seventh as Santowski scored on a wild pitch.

 

      Leading the way for the Quakers was Mike Chelenza and Ian Spector who each went 1-3.

 

      The victory moves Piedmont to 1-0 overall. These two teams will square-off again tomorrow, weather permitting, with first-pitch slated for 1:00.
