BAKER RESIGNS GUILFORD BASEBALL POST
Greensboro, NC (07/18/05) -- Guilford College head baseball coach Gene Baker resigned his position Monday to accept a teaching and administrative position in Nashville, TN. The resignation is effective July 31 and concludes Baker's eight-year stint with the Quakers.
Baker leaves Guilford for Davidson Academy in Nashville, where he will serve as
the school's athletics director and on the math department faculty.
Guilford went 179-149 in Baker's tenure and posted a 24-17 record in 2005 for
it's school-record fifth straight 20-win campaign. Guilford reached the Old
Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Tournament for the fifth time under Baker
last spring. The Quakers won a school-record 30 games and reached the ODAC
Tournament final for the second time in four years. Baker coached 11 all-region
and 23 all-conference student-athletes at Guilford, including Joe Dooley '03,
the school's first baseball All-American since 1967. Dooley joined Chad
Coward '00 and A.J. McCauley '05 as the three Baker-coached Quakers
to sign professional baseball contracts.
The 16th head coach in Guilford's baseball history, Baker has a 378-506 career
record in 18 seasons, that include head-coaching stops at Louisville, Northern
Iowa and Bristol (TN).
A search for Baker's successor is underway. The new coach will inherit a squad featuring 25 letter winners from Guilford's 2005 unit.
