Sophomore Ty Mankovitch and senior Chris Tirro each drove in three runs while senior pitcher Rich Fallat tossed a complete game as the Savannah College of Art and Design baseball team defeated Guilford College 8-2 Sunday afternoon at Grayson Stadium.
The Bees improved to 2-3 and will next play Edward Waters College in a 7 p.m.
contest Wednesday (Feb. 11) at Grayson Stadium. Guilford fell to 1-1.
The Bees took a 1-0 lead in the third inning off Guilford starter Oliver Beale
(0-1). James O'Connell singled up the middle and moved to third base on Andy
Welsh's single to right. The Bees scored their run on a double steal by Welsh
and O'Connell.
SCAD, which belted five Guilford pitchers for 13 hits, took a 3-0 lead with two runs in the fourth, courtesy of
Tirro's single back up the middle that scored Sean Barber and Mankovitch.
Barber led the Bees with three hits.
The only spot of trouble for Fallat came in the fifth inning when the Quakers
put together a two-out rally. A.J. McCauley was hit by a pitch and moved to
second on a base hit by Jeff Arzonico. Both scored on Brian Slate's double to
right field.
The Bees broke the game open with a four-run seventh to take a 7-2 lead.
Mankovitch had the big hit of the inning with a bases-clearing triple to
left-center field off Guilford reliever Matt Spoerlein. Tirro drove in the other
run for SCAD with a sacrifice fly.
SCAD added an insurance run in the eighth with a sacrifice fly by Tony Ruggiero.
Fallat (2-0) scattered seven hits and struck out eight for the Bees.
