  • QUAKERS' McCAULEY, Miller earn ALL-STATE RECOGNITION

Greensboro, NC  (06/01/04) - Guilford senior A.J. McCauley (Pittsburgh, PA/Plum) and junior Josh Miller (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) earned spots on the inaugural North Carolina Collegiate Sports Information Association (NCCSIA) College Division All-State Baseball Team. The squad consists of NCAA Division II, NCAA Division III and NAIA student-athletes from North Carolina colleges and universities. North Carolina sports information directors submitted nominees and NCCSIA members selected the team.

McCauley concluded a brilliant career in 2004 as the Quakers' fourth-leading hitter with a .362 batting average, 20 runs batted in (RBI) and five doubles in 39 games. Guilford's leadoff batter and center fielder, he led the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) in stolen bases (20) and at-bats (177). McCauley also ranked among the league leaders in runs and hits per game. His 64 hits and 20 stolen bases this year rank fourth and sixth, respectively, in school history.

A three-time All-ODAC selection and a 2003 all-region pick, McCauley set Guilford career standards for batting average (.380). hits (243) runs (159) and stolen bases (85) this season. The team captain also holds school standards for at bats, hits and stolen bases in a campaign. He leaves with three of the top-four single-season hit totals in school history and three of the top-eight single-season stolen base totals in school history. McCauley received Guilford's 2003-04 English Athletic Leadership Award, the school's top athletic honor.

Miller, a 6-0, 175-pound outfielder, started all 39 games in left field and batted third for the Quakers. A Second Team All-ODAC pick, he led the Quakers with a career-high .414 batting average and also paced the club with 10 doubles, two triples and 65 hits. His .414 batting average is the fifth-highest average in Quakers' history and his 65 hits rank third all time. Miller placed second on the club with 39 runs scored, two homers, and 36 runs batted in (RBI). He stands fourth among ODAC hits leaders and fifth in on-base percentage (.483). Miller also ranks among the league's best in batting average (6th) and stolen bases (12, 7th). He had 19 games with two or more hits and nine multiple-RBI contests. Miller concluded the season on a career-long 11-game hitting streak.

Miller captured the ODAC's Baseball Hitter of the Week Award April 12 after hitting .579 with six RBI and three outfield assists in four games from April 5-10. Included in that stretch was a 5-5 performance at the plate against league-rival Emory & Henry April 10. Miller also had four RBI and a triple in the second game of the conference twinbill and went 3-4 in the opener. He was four-for-four with three RBI, four runs scored, a double and a home run in Guilford's 13-2 ODAC win over Randolph-Macon March 20.

Coach Gene Baker's club posted a 20-19 overall record and finished eighth among 10 ODAC teams with a 6-12 league mark. Miller is one of 24 letter winners due back in 2005.
