Baseball Release - Game 1 - Guilford College
- SEVEN-RUN 10TH INNING LIFTS GUILFORD TO SEASON-OPENING WIN
Savannah, GA (02/08/03) - Guilford
took advantage of four Savannah College of Art and Design errors in a seven-run
10th inning as the Quakers defeated the Bees, 8-2, in a college baseball game
Saturday evening at Grayson Stadium.
The Quakers improved to 1-0 while the Bees
remained winless in three games. The two teams wrap up the two-game series with
a noon contest Sunday (Feb. 9) at Grayson Stadium.
SCAD sent the game into extra innings when
they tied the game at 1 in the bottom of the eighth inning. Scott Frederick led
off the inning with a double down the left field line to break up the no-hitter
by Guilford pitcher Mike Goettler. Frederick moved to third base on Armando
Abreu's sacrifice bunt. Frederick later scored on Jarrod Norrell's sacrifice
fly.
Guilford mounted it rally in the 10th off
SCAD starter Brad Kempson (0-1) when Zach Morgan reached on a throwing error by
SCAD second baseman Alex Cotto. A.J. McCauley reached on a infield bunt and the
Quakers loaded the bases when Kempson mishandled a sacrifice bunt by Luke
Kempton down the third base line.
The Quakers took the lead for good when Brad
Franklin followed with an RBI single to left field to score Morgan and give
Guilford a 2-1 lead. That opened the flood gates as the Quakers sent 11 batters
to the plate and scored seven runs off three SCAD pitchers to take a 8-1 lead.
