FRANKLIN WINS WEEKLY BASEBALL HONOR
Salem, VA (03/10/03) -- Guilford senior Brad Franklin (Greensboro, NC/Southern Guilford) received the Old Dominion Athletic Conference's (ODAC) initial 2003 Baseball Player of the Week Award, the league office announced Monday. The announcement marks the second player of the week award of Franklin's career.
Franklin
has played a key role in Guilford's best start (12-3) since the Quakers
moved from the NAIA ranks to NCAA Division III in 1991. The right-handed hitting
left-fielder stands third on the team with a .381 batting average and leads the
Quakers in runs (20), hits (24), triples (4), home runs (5), runs batted in
(RBI) (25), and stolen bases (9). He owns a .852 slugging percentage and
extended his team-best 10-game hitting streak in Guilford's doubleheader sweep
of league-rival Eastern Mennonite Sunday (3/10). Franklin hit for the
cycle in the nightcap, including an inside-the-park grand slam in the sixth
inning that highlighted Guilford's 17-3 victory. He finished the game 4-6 at the
plate with five RBI, his team-leading sixth multiple-RBI game of the season. Franklin
also has seven multiple-hit contests. He went 4-6 with three home runs in a
doubleheader sweep of visiting Franklin & Marshall March 2. His solo homer
in the first game broke a 4-4 tie and lifted Guilford to a 5-4 victory. He
belted two more home runs in the Guilford's 7-1 game-two win.
A 2002 first team All-South and All-ODAC performer, Franklin has climbed into eighth place on Guilford's career RBI chart (93) in just over two seasons since transferring from Division I Elon in 2001. He set school records for runs (55), triples (9) and RBI (51) last year and ranks 13th on the Quakers' career runs list with 92. Franklin ranked seventh among the NCAA Division III triples leaders and 34th in runs per game last year.
Franklin has helped coach Gene Baker's club to seven straight wins and nine victories in the last 10 games. Guilford is 2-0 in the ODAC and hosts Southern Virginia Tuesday (03/11) at 1:00 pm.
