Jared Vermilya belted a two-run single in the first and Kevin McConnell followed with a two-run blast to help Piedmont College past Guilford College, 6-2, in a non league baseball game Monday. The four-run first was enough support for six Lions' pitchers, who combined to fan 11 Quakers and allow just four hits. Click here for the game statistics and narration.

Zach Kunz added a solo homer in the third inning for Piedmont (1-1), which gained a spilt of the season-opening series. Teammate John Duke had two hits and an RBI. Starter Dusty Black (1-0) picked up the win with two scoreless innings.

Guilford (1-1) scored both runs in the eighth inning thanks to Derek Hardison's RBI double and a run-scoring ground out by Kent Peterson. Starting pitcher Sammy Stuart (0-1) allowed four runs in four innings to take the loss.

Given the heavy snow in Virginia, the USA South Athletic Conference/Old Dominion Athletic Conference Challenge has been cancelled. Instead, the Quakers will host Ferrum College in a doubleheader Saturday (2/13) at 12 noon and play a single game at home versus Averett University Sunday (2/14) at 1:00 p.m.

Kyle Wooden was named an honorable mention selection to the 2010 D3baseball.com Preseason All-America Team. Click here for the full release.
