Painting
Instructor: Adele Wayman
Painting at Guilford College requires a lot of commitment. Because there is only one painting class per semester, the painting studio belongs to your class and your class alone, which means that your work area is there for you whenever you want or need it.
Different styles of painting are introduced - abstract painting, impressionist painting, expressionist painting and traditional realistic techniques. The primary medium taught at Guilford is oil paint. The use and different applications of paint, composition, and color theory are all important skills that students will learn from painting courses at Guilford College.
In intermediate and advanced painting courses, students have the opportunity to do independent study projects where they can explore in depth their own interests in subject matter and style. There are also field trips to art galleries, museums and artists’ studios. Visiting painters have included Grace Hartigan, a figurative abstract expressionist; William Bailey, realist painter and legendary Yale University professor, Miriam Schapiro, feminist icon, and Hung Liu, well-known Chinese- American artist.
