Major Gifts
The Art Department gratefully acknowledges the support of three generous awards: the Barbara Fry English Memorial Fund, the Merry Moor Winnett Photography Award, and the James Sampson Laing Art Scholarship Fund.
Barbara Fry English Memorial Fund
The Barbara Fry English Memorial Fund was established by Jack English '76 to perpetuate the memory of his late wife (an artist who died in 2005 following a battle with cancer). The fund supports Art Department programs including the Senior Thesis Art Exhibition. Jack and Barbara married while he was still a student at Guilford and they lived in the Frazier Apartments. Jack English has worked for Chevron Texaco as a geologist since 1978. He was the Sesquicentennial Distinguished Alumni Lecturer at Guilford College in 1987. Jack generously continues, in partnership with Chevron, to increase his support for the Guilford College Art Department Senior Thesis Exhibit, the central show piece of our program.

Merry Moor Winnett Photography Award
The Merry Moor Winnett Photography Award was established in her memory to honor her as a creative, inspiring and beloved photo instructor at Guilford College by her husband, Tommy Winnett, in 1995. This scholarship is awarded to continuing art majors based on portfolio submissions, juried by the art department and announced at the Spring Awards Ceremony.
James Sampson Laing Art Scholarship
The James Sampson Laing Art Scholarship Fund was established in memory of his life by his in-laws S. and Elizabeth LaRose in 1983. This scholarship is awarded to continuing art majors based on portfolio submissions, juried by the art department and announced at the Spring Awards Ceremony.
Gifts to these three endowed funds provide long term support for the programs and people at the core of the Art Department. In addition, there is always need for annual support of the Art Department to help offset our operating expenses such as art supplies, workshops, and speakers.
