The Creative Legacy of David Newton

March 23-May 4, 2012

David Newton was a talented and influential artist and teacher, who was hired by Guilford College in 2003 to teach and lead the Art Department’s sculpture program. In 2009, the same year he was granted tenure, David was diagnosed with late-stage colon cancer. He valiantly attempted to resist the ravages of the disease and continued to teach and chair the Art Department, while undergoing treatment. After a courageous 18-month effort to regain his health, he died April 14, 2011 at the age of 57.

This exhibition and the accompanying catalog with reflections on his legacy, paid tribute to him by presenting a selection of his art spanning four decades of his career. Beloved by his students, colleagues and friends and family, David is remembered for how he combined a serious commitment to his art with his devotion to all of his students (not just the art majors). He brought passion, good humor, a zealous work ethic, and fine craftsmanship to everything to which he set his mind and hand. A birthright Quaker, David’s spiritual beliefs guided his life and artistic practice.
