Maia Dery
Maia is an inveterate questioner who gets fleeting glimpses at answers in the materials and processes of film and darkroom photography.
In a rapidly changing economy and technological landscape, how can students discern potential paths on which their passion and gifts will flourish? How can they develop the inspiration, creative skills, and discipline that will serve them regardless of where they go or what they do? What is the difference between teaching and performance art? A flash mob and a field trip?
To occasionally quiet the questions, Maia indulges her love of water, waves, turbulence, and oceanic feelings of all sorts by surfing a 9 foot longboard. In an effort to square the chemical reality of darkroom photography with the world water situation, she and her students have set out on a multi-year experiment in less toxic means of producing meaningful images.
