Drawing
Instructor: Roy Nydorf
Drawing classes at Guilford teach a wide range of mixed media and subject matter so that as a student you can discover many drawing styles and techniques. The ability and skill to render realistic images is stressed, but also the discovery and utilization of personal style and expression. Students are encouraged to find their own voice or message within each drawing.
There are various types of drawing classes, from the study of basic drawing principles in Drawing I, the study of the human figure from live models in Life Drawing, and the use of mixed media in 2D Design. Drawing II focuses on the artistic traditions that are part of the culture of the US: African and African-American, Latin American and Native American imagery.
Class critiques are an important part of every project. Students not only receive constructive criticism from their fellow artists and their professor, but are also expected to give advice to other students, so that you gain a good grasp on how you are succeeding in your work and ways in which you could improve. You also keep every project that you make, which you collect in a final portfolio at the end of the semester, and seeing the cumulative effort and progress you have made in one semester is an extremely gratifying experience.
All art students and faculty look forward to the annual Drawathon, a student organized event. The department hires live models to pose in all three upstairs studios from 9pm to 3 am. There’s also live music and food. Art students, artists and faculty from other area colleges are invited to join us.
