Jeske, Mortensen, Middleton Receive Bruce. B. Stewart Awards
Top of Page
The Bruce B. Stewart '61 Awards for Teaching Excellence and Community Service was presented to faculty members Jeff Jeske and Eric Mortensen and to staff member Norma Middleton at the spring awards convocation April 9.

The cash awards for teaching and advising excellence (faculty) and community service (staff) honor one tenured faculty member, one junior/non-tenured faculty member and one staff member. In addition, the Bruce Stewart Scholarship is presented to first-year students based on financial need and merit.

Jeff JeskeJeske, the Charles A. Dana Professor of English, joined the Guilford faculty in 1986. In addition to teaching courses in literature, writing, journalism and film, Jeske is the faculty adviser to The Guilfordian, the college's award-winning student newspaper. He served on the curriculum revision committee that established the college's current curriculum, and edited the college catalog for several years. Jeske has twice won the Excellence in Teaching Award.

Eric MortensenMortensen is an assistant professor of religious studies, focusing on East Asian religion and comparative religion. He has applied for and won grants that funded student and faculty research trips to China and Nepal, and also advises students wishing to study abroad in Asia. He served on the committee that oversaw Guilford's Year of Spirit and Spirituality (2005-06), and was instrumental in the development of the Center for Principled Problem Solving, which opened last fall. He received one of the center's pilot project grants for "Building Bridges," a program to build relationships between faculty and athletics teams.

Norma MiddletonMiddleton, who joined the staff in 1973, is the college registrar. In this capacity she interacts with every member of the academic community, coordinating course registration, processing grades, maintaining academic records and certifying students for graduation. The registrar's office also monitors academic policy and communicates these procedures to students, faculty, staff and alumni.

The annual awards were funded by a $1 million gift from trustee Bill Soles '81, his sister and alumna Jan Soles '87 Nelson and their father, the late W. Roger Soles. The Soles' gift honors Stewart, who has served his alma mater as chair of the Board of Trustees, provost and director of the Richardson Fellows Program, among other roles. Stewart is head of school of Sidwell Friends School in Washington, D.C.

Algernon Sydney Sullivan Awards Presented to Fulton, Zavaleta-Jimenez
Top of Page
W. Groome Fulton, Jr. '60 and Irving Zavaleta-Jimenez '08 received this year's Algernon Sydney Sullivan Awards at spring awards convocation April 9.

The awards, presented by the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation, recognize extraordinary service by one graduating student and one member of the community each year.

Fulton is the retired president of Fulton Associates, Inc., a manufacturer's representative firm based in High Point. He also chaired the steering committee that formed the Bank of North Carolina in 1991, and has served as chair of the bank's Board of Directors and Executive Committee since its opening.

He has a long record of service both to Guilford and to the wider community. For the last two years he has chaired the Board of Directors for Open Door Ministries, a High Point homeless shelter. During that time the shelter expanded to include the Arthur Cassall House for recovering substance abusers and "Project Homefront," a pilot program of outreach to the chronically homeless.

Fulton and wife Ann helped develop Forest Hills Presbyterian Church starting in 1963, and Fulton has remained heavily involved in the church's governance. Most recently he has served as chair of the church's endowment committee, overseeing the disbursal of over $3 million annually.

He is also president of the Board of Trustees and Executive Committee of River Landing at Sandy Ridge, a retirement community operated by Presbyterian Homes, Inc., and a representative to the corporation's Board of Governors. Fulton joined Guilford's Board of Trustees in 1999. He has been a member of the High Point Rotary since 1969.

Zavaleta-Jimenez will graduate May 10 with a double-major in French and accounting. A native of Veracruz, Mexico, he emigrated to the United States in 2000 at the age of 14 with his mother and sister, joining other relatives living in Burlington, N.C. At the time, he spoke no English. Much of Zavaleta-Jimenez's community service is directed toward other Latino students, many of whom hope to be the first in their families to attend college.

As a Bonner Scholar, Zavaleta-Jimenez has personally completed over 2,500 hours of community service during his four years at Guilford. He was a student coordinator of the college's dedicated site at Glenwood Library, teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) to immigrants from several countries. He was also instrumental in developing a new service site, Project HERE (Hispanic Education Retention Excellence), which offers tutoring and mentoring to area middle- and high school students.

Last fall, Zavaleta-Jimenez organized a day-long conference for Latino students in Guilford and Alamance counties called "Soy un Líder" ("I am a Leader"). Geared toward first-generation college applicants, sessions included information on college searches and financial aid opportunities. It brought together 100 students from 13 high schools.

Zavaleta-Jimenez is also vice president of the Student Senate, and has been named to the dean's list several times. Last November, the North Carolina Campus Compact gave him its Community Impact Student Award, presented to students who have made innovative, significant contributions to campus-based efforts to address community needs.

Fifty select Southern colleges and universities present the Sullivan Awards to students and community members for "excellence of character and service to humanity," as prescribed by the Algernon Sydney Sullivan Foundation. Sullivan was a Virginia-born New York lawyer who was well known for his compassion. Guilford has presented the awards annually since 2002.

Guilford Awards Multi-year Dining Services Contract to Meriwether Godsey
Top of Page

Guilford has awarded Meriwether Godsey a multi-year contract for dining services, President Kent Chabotar announced in April. Meriwether Godsey is a Lynchburg, Va.-based company with more than 30 years of dining program experience in the Mid-Atlantic Region.

Meriwether Godsey will succeed Sodexho, which has held the dining services contract at Guilford since 1988. Sodexho management and employees were informed of the change March 31. The management transition will take place over the next several months and be in full effect by the beginning of the fall semester in August.

While the college's contract with Sodexho does not permit the new vendor to hire the current management team for at least a year, other dining services staff members will be given the opportunity to be interviewed and hired by Meriwether Godsey.

Based on its evaluation of three vendor finalists, a 16-member Dining Services Advisory Committee, including six students appointed by Community Senate, recommended Meriwether Godsey based on:

  • The overall "fit" with Guilford.
  • The company's ability to develop a customized Guilford food brand identity.
  • The company's transparency with detailed financial information from the beginning of the bid process. Evidence that a quality management culture applies throughout the company.
  • Evidence of time, attention and detail dedicated to Guilford.
  • The company's commitment to a living wage.
  • The company's proven commitment to local and organic sustainable purchases.
  • A management profile that is 68% female and 29% non-white and hourly staff at 68% female and 39% non-white.
  • It is a women-owned enterprise.

Meriwether Godsey pays an average hourly wage in excess of $11 and about 25% higher than the other bid process finalists, Sodexho and Bon Appetit, proposed to pay. Meriwether Godsey's wages are closer to a living wage, which can be defined as "a minimum hourly wage necessary for a person to achieve some specific standard of living." A living wage varies by family size, composition and region and typically exceeds state/federal minimum wage.

Meriwether Godsey has a set of performance standards that will be reviewed quarterly, and company management will visit campus on a regularly scheduled basis. Performance standards include financial accountability, commitments to sustainability and sanitation and effective marketing and feedback mechanisms.

$1.5 million in campus dining facilities improvements are part of the agreement between the college and Meriwether Godsey, and that planning will begin immediately on long-term Founders Hall dining options. Minor changes will occur this summer, mainly to the grill area in the basement, and major work is anticipated in 2009.
