Guilford College Alumni Association Awards and Recipients for 2007

Alumni Excellence Award: This award was established in 1980 to recognize alumni who have contributed outstanding service and achievement as humanitarians and/or professionals in their chosen field of endeavor. Service, commitment, integrity and success are the key factors in making these selections.

  • Miriam Almaguer Leiva '61-- Distinguished Professor of Mathematics Emerita at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where she was the first Bonnie E. Cone Distinguished Professor for Teaching and the first woman selected to an endowed chair. She is president of TODOS: Mathematics for ALL.
  • Seth C. Macon '40 -- Worked for Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Company for 44 years. Holds the Chartered Life Underwriter Designation and is a graduate of the Executive Program at UNC Chapel Hill. At Guilford, Seth was chairman of the trustees and chaired the Finance and Investment Committee. He is the recipient of the college's Distinguished Service Award and is a member of the Athletic Hall of Fame.
  • Hazel Monsees Macon '41-- Mother of two Guilford graduates. She taught history and English at Providence High School in Randolph County and at Linwood High School in Davidson County. She has been active in the First Baptist Church and was a member of the Guilford College Art Appreciation Club and the O.Henry Woman's Club of Greensboro.
  • David M. Spear '61 -- Worked as a newspaperman from 1963-84. Began a new career in art in 1988. He has received many honors, some of which were the Founier Award, and named as a Guggenheim Fellow. His collections are in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and Museum of fine Art in Houston, among others. he has published two books of his work The Neugents: "Close to Home" and Visible Spirits.

Young Alumni Achievement Award: The Young Alumni Achievement Award was established in 2001 to recognize young alumni who have demonstrated outstanding achievement early in their careers in their chosen field of endeavor. Service, commitment to the field, integrity and success are the key factors in making these selections. Candidates should be excellent representatives of the values of Guilford College and show commitment to the College. Alumni under 40 years of age are eligible for this award.

  • Christian W. Reynolds '97 -- His background is in restaurant management. He managed the Spring Garden Restaurant, later opening two chain restaurants called Uno's Chicago Bar and Grill. In May 2002, he and his wife helped to open M'Coul's Public House in Greensboro. On June 17, 2003, he opened his own restaurant, Solaris Restaurant and Bar.

The Charles C. Hendricks Distinguished Service Award: This award was established in 1954 to honor those persons who have given outstanding and prolonged service to Guilford College. The recipient may or may not be an alumnus of the college.

  • Beth Keiser -- Joined the faculty in 1966, retired in 2002. Specialist in Chaucer and other medieval English poets. Served as clerk of faculty, clerk of faculty affairs. Chaired the English Department and the Humanities Division.
  • Mel Keiser -- Joined faculty in 1966, retired in 2002. Taught religious studies and interdisciplinary courses. Clerk of the faculty. Chaired the Department of Religious Studies. Published articles and has authored four books.
  • Carol Stoneburner -- Arrived at Guilford in 1968. Was part-time co-coordinator/director of women's studies and director of faculty development. Co-taught six different courses with husband, John.
  • John Stoneburner -- Joined the Religious Studies Department in 1968 and taught more than 35 different courses in religion and interdisciplinary studies. Served as clerk of the faculty, was interim academic dean. Retired in 2007.

All nominations will be reviewed by the nominations and awards committee and then brought before the Alumni Board for approval.
