Career Services - A Lifetime of Help!
With the fallout from the economic recession, some alumni have been experiencing unemployment or a cut in their work hours. Some of these Guilfordians have wisely found their way back to the Center for Career and Community Learning (CACL) for assistance as they seek to discover what's next in their personal and professional lives. They didn't forget that career services are available at no charge to all Guilford alumni for life!
Just as nature stores energy during winter in preparation for the upcoming months of growth, a lull in the economy offers the opportunity for professional exploration and readjustment. And, there are many ways that CACL can be of service to you during such transitions. First and foremost is counseling, from both career and vocational perspectives. Career counseling includes assistance with updating and polishing your resume, crafting an effective cover letter, making career transitions, and practicing interview skills. Vocational counseling addresses the big question of, "Who in the world am I?!" and helps to explore one's sense of passion and purpose. While examining potential future options and developing new skills, alumni can also take advantage of Guilford's internship program to identify potential sites for hands-on experience.
Career & Community Learning also has a full career library as well as computer lab and printers available to alumni who are exploring their career options. Books on specific jobs within majors, re-careering, and other pertinent career and vocation topics are available. CACL's webpages (www.guilford.edu/cacl and www.guilford.edu/internship) offer on-line assistance including links to a wide variety of job posting boards. CACL also co-sponsors an annual regional Career Fair. Alumni are welcome to attend. We recommend that you dress professionally and bring with you professional copies of your current resume.
Whatever your career needs, let the counselors in Career & Community Learning be a lifeline for guidance and assistance with professional development and transitions. We're open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. and after hours by appointment. To schedule an appointment or for more information, including our location, please contact us at 336-316-2187 or careers@guilford.edu.
4th Alumni Art Exchange and Exhibition
Guilford College Art Gallery invites eligible alumni artists to submit artwork to the 4th Juried Alumni Art Exhibition in the main gallery of Hege Library Jan. 19-Feb. 28.
Entries are sought from artists 18 years and older who have attended classes in the Guilford Art Department, and other Guilford alumni working as professional artists. All work must be original and not previously shown at the college. The submission of recent work is encouraged and all media are eligible. Additional requirements are noted on the online entry form.
Submissions for this exhibition will be accepted online only. Click here for the entry form. After submitting an entry form with the titles and details of up to three works, you will receive an email with instructions on how to upload your images. The deadline for submissions to the Alumni Exhibition is Nov. 30.
In conjunction with the exhibition, the 4th Alumni Art Exchange will be held on Feb. 20. Guilford alumni who have established successful careers in the arts will return to campus to share their experiences in a day-long symposium of panel discussions and workshops on topics ranging from graduate school opportunities, art education, careers in art-related businesses, and prospering as practicing artists.
If you have questions or suggestions, please contact TERRY HAMMOND, Director and Curator, Guilford College Art Gallery, at 336-316-2438 or thammond@guilford.edu.
DC Guilford Alumni News:
Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2009 DC Guilford Alumni Event Survey earlier this year. Guests at the brunch will get a preview of how we are putting your feedback to work in 2010. One change we already made was to move the Annual Brunch to Welcome New Alumni to a Saturday instead of the usual Sunday.
Did you miss out on the survey last spring? We have reactivated it for a limited time.
Click here to take the survey or copy and paste this link into your browser: www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=QOyChr2W5_2bCv0pEqNlX6Hg_3d_3d. We estimate the survey takes about 10 minutes to complete.

Dear DC area Guilford Alumni!
We are pleased to report that the DC alumni network continues to build momentum. We have already enjoyed several successful events, including a tour of the Botanic Gardens, a river cleanup, and several happy hour events. Our alumni e-mail list continues to grow, and we hope that you will continue to encourage your fellow alumni to contact us so that they might be added to the e-mail list as well.
In addition, we hope to see an increase in the number of announcements of personal updates for class notes. You can now submit notes online.
Everyone enjoys reading about their classmates, so don't be shy!
As always, if you would like to schedule a Guilford Alumni event, please contact the DC Regional Council at dcalumni@guilford.edu
Sincerely,
The Guilford DC Regional Alumni Council
