Journeys in Blackness Awards

2016 Recipients

2015 Recipients

With approximately 100 students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends in attendance, the annual Journeys in Blackness Banquet on March 28 recognized black student excellence and honored the trailblazers who opened doors for others at Guilford and throughout the community.

The featured honoree at this year’s event was retired professor Carolyn Beard Whitlow, who was recognized for more than 20 years of leadership and service to the College. Alumni traveled from near and far to see Carolyn and other community members.

“Carolyn was definitely my most influential professor in school and her legacy continues to have a major impact on my life so many years later,” said Neena Robertson ’02, who made the trip from New Jersey to attend the banquet.

Student spoken word artist Brandon “B-Rock” Brockington and Suah African Dance Theater set the tone of Africana culture.

In addition to the honors and awards, Minnette Coleman '73 presented a compilation of pictures and stories in atimeline of black history at Guilford, and Teresa Bedzigui ’16 made a presentation about black excellence and what it means to her.

The student leaders of Brothers and Sisters in Blackness (BASIB) created the Journeys in Blackness Banquet. It is sponsored by BASIB, the Multicultural Education Department (MED), the Office of Alumni Relations and the Black Alumni at Guilford College Advisory Board (BAGC).

Gilbert Bailey '91, Alumni Excellence Award

First person in his immediate family to attend college and stresses the importance of a liberal arts education. Extreme passion for Guilford plus huge success in his chosen field of endeavor. In 2009, Gilbert joined Beanstalk Data, a Charlotte-based Business-to-Consumer CRM company and one of the region’s fastest growing privately-held companies. As executive vice president, he continues to do most of the heavy lifting on writing agreements for Beanstalk Data, but now it’s for the company’s own intellectual property [credits Guilford for being able to write quickly and well]. He has consistently supported Guilford as a Trustee, as a prior GCAAB member, through financial support, and "hands-on" web support, and is involved on campus often. He has served on the local school board as well.

The Community that Saved the "Guilford Woods" - Community Cares Award

In 2013, there was a proposal to expand the "Hodgin's Retreat" Apartments to have a severe impact on the Guilford College Woods. This group led the fight to preserve the property and to provide funding for the college to acquire the property.
