Journeys in Blackness Awards

2015 Recipients

With approximately 100 students, alumni, faculty, staff and friends in attendance, the annual Journeys in Blackness Banquet on March 28 recognized black student excellence and honored the trailblazers who opened doors for others at Guilford and throughout the community.

The featured honoree at this year’s event was retired professor Carolyn Beard Whitlow, who was recognized for more than 20 years of leadership and service to the College. Alumni traveled from near and far to see Carolyn and other community members.

“Carolyn was definitely my most influential professor in school and her legacy continues to have a major impact on my life so many years later,” said Neena Robertson ’02, who made the trip from New Jersey to attend the banquet.

Student spoken word artist Brandon “B-Rock” Brockington and Suah African Dance Theater set the tone of Africana culture.

In addition to the honors and awards, Minnette Coleman '73 presented a compilation of pictures and stories in a timeline of black history at Guilford, and Teresa Bedzigui ’16 made a presentation about black excellence and what it means to her.

The student leaders of Brothers and Sisters in Blackness (BASIB) created the Journeys in Blackness Banquet. It is sponsored by BASIB, the Multicultural Education Department (MED), the Office of Alumni Relations and the Black Alumni at Guilford College Advisory Board (BAGC).
