Notary Public

The Department of the Secretary of State oversees a Notary Public Education Program to educate notaries about legal, ethical and procedural requirements of notarial acts and to assure that notaries comply with the law and deliver quality notary service. The Notary Public Workshop at Guilford College meets the course of instruction criteria, described in N.C.G.S. Chapter 10B, for all commissioned notaries public.

Program Curriculum

Instruction is divided into five areas which are:

  • The Office–Covers the Notary’s Role, Applicable Law, Process for Becoming a Notary, Recommissions, Change of Name or Location, Electronic Notary Registration, Commission Termination and Enforcement, Criminal Offenses, and Summary of Procedural Requirements for Changes in the Status of a Notary Public
  • Powers and Limitations–Covers Powers, Limitations and Requirements, and Fees
  • Notarial Procedures–Covers Performance of the Notarial Act, Notarization Requirements, Disqualifying Circumstances, Order of Multiple Notarial Acts, Attestation Requirements, Oaths and Affirmations, Authentication, and Notary Journal
  • Certificates–Covers Basic Forms of the Notary Act, Alternative Statutory Forms of Certificates for Real Estate Instruments, Alternative Statutory Forms for Entity Conveyances of Real Estate, Alternative Statutory Forms for Entity Conveyances of Personal Property, Short-Form Powers of Attorney, Acknowledgment by Attorney-in-Fact, Estate Planning Documents, Motor Vehicle Title Documents, and Notarial Components of Electronic Documents
  • Common Notarial Settings–Covers Affidavits, Verifications, and Depositions, Real Estate Documents, Estate Planning Documents, Entities and Trusts, and Motor Vehicle Titles

Program Requirements

While anyone may attend this workshop, please note that North Carolina Notaries Public eligibility criteria require that all persons applying to become Notaries Public must be at least 18 years of age, reside or have a regular place of work or business in this state, reside legally in the U.S., possess a high school diploma or equivalent, and be able to speak, read, and write the English language. Psychology of Leadership and Teamwork

The Psychology of Leadership and Teamwork will guide participants through an engaging series of exercises designed to explore the ways in which our psychological preferences impact our ability to lead. The workshop is designed primarily at people in management and leadership positions but suitable for all employees and will include a complete work-up using the Myers-Briggs assessment tool, several interactive lectures, group activities and reflection. This will be a two day workshop for three hours each day.

Program Overview

Participants in this program will:

  • Develop an understanding of basic psychology and leadership principles
  • Understand the Myers-Briggs and next-level leadership
  • Learn about the history of leadership theory and modern application
  • Explore common mistakes and why those mistakes happen

Our ability to work with others is crucial in modern society. An understanding of psychological preferences can enhance our ability to work more effectively and lead others. This workshop will not only help leaders from a variety of sectors understand their own psychological preferences and those of coworkers, but will also lead participants through an understanding of type dynamics. Through a study of type dynamics participants will learn how to identify and manage personal blind-spots that hinder effectiveness. Additionally, the facilitator will introduce participants to a variety of leadership theories and explore how to apply these theories in work settings.

Instructor: Alan Mueller

Dr. Alan Mueller is a native of North Carolina. He holds multiple degrees from Appalachian State University including a B.A. in philosophy and religion, an M.A. in college student development an Ed.S. in higher education administration and a doctorate in educational leadership. He is also a Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Certified Interpreter. Alan has worked in sales, customer service, consumer lending and has spent the last 15 years as an administrator in higher education. While in higher education, Alan has worked in leadership development, orientation, career services, academic advising and campus activities. He has presented and published regionally and nationally on a variety of topics including experiential education, multiculturalism, campus-based marketing, values-based education and the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator. He currently serves as the assistant dean for career development at Guilford College in Greensboro, North Carolina.

Collaboration and Creativity at Work

Collaboration and Creativity at Work will guide participants through engaging exercises to learn to overcome common thinking traps and pitfalls in communication that can thwart productive workplace relations. The workshop is designed for all workers who need to work with others to achieve common goals. Drawing on well-established principles from the literature on creativity and collaboration, the workshop will build participants’ confidence and skill in finding and developing new and useful ideas. 

Program Overview

Participants in this workshop will:

  • Explore ways to dig out of mental ruts and create new ideas
  • Practice techniques for analyzing ideas from all angles
  • Learn collaborative tools for generating multiple solutions to challenges

Instructor

Dr. Larry Lavender is a Professor in UNCG’s School of Music, Theatre and Dance and a Faculty Fellow in the Lloyd International Honors College. His teaching specializations are creativity theories and practices, dance criticism and aesthetics, and human/animal relations in the arts. Larry holds an MFA in Choreography from UC Irvine, and a PhD in Dance Education from New York University. He has published and presented widely both in the US and internationally.

Social Security and Medicare Rules

Baby Boomers How Will the New Social Security and Medicare Rules Impact You?

Recent legislation passed in November suddenly changed the already complex Social Security claiming rules, as well as increasing Medicare Part B premiums for many Americans.  How will this impact you?  

Baby boomers now face two sets of rules for guiding their Social Security strategies, and some boomers MUST act by April 30, 2016 to get covered by the older, more lucrative “loopholes” governing Social Security. Meanwhile, there will be no cost of living adjustment (COLA) for current Social Security recipients in 2016, but many will face increased Medicare premiums. What can you do to help prepare for 2016 and beyond?

Instructor Patrick Rush

Patrick Rush, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional since 2002, is the principal of Triad Financial Advisors. He has been providing financial planning and investment advice since 1998. Prior to joining TFA, Patrick was a vice president and senior financial advisor with Merrill Lynch in Greensboro and subsequently became the president of Independent Wealth Management. In 2012, Independent Wealth Management merged with Triad Financial Advisors providing TFA with future growth opportunities and continuous stability for its clients.

Patrick has a passion for teaching and promoting financial education. He authored Retirement 101, and has been teaching as an adjunct instructor at Guilford College since 2007. Patrick believes that managing wealth is more than a matter of portfolio construction, but rather a continuous and evolving process that changes with personal needs and goals. He strives to provide simplicity, clarity and discipline to achieve each individual's distinct financial objectives.

Patrick resides in Greensboro, N.C. with his wife, Christina, their daughter, Havana, and twin sons, Walker and Quincy.
