Which Credits Will Transfer?

As a transfer student, you earn credit for courses taken through college programs at accredited junior colleges or community colleges and for courses taken at accredited four-year colleges and universities. The First Year Experience course is waived for students transferring 12 hours or more.

Up to 64 semester hours of credit is allowed from two-year institutions. There is no limit to the number of semester hours that may transfer from regionally accredited four-year colleges. Credit is allowed only for courses with a grade of "C-" or higher.

Here are some general transfer rules:

  • Courses must be in the same department as Guilford offers or must be similar in nature.
  • If a course is not in a department that Guilford offers, it will be evaluated individually and may transfer as elective credit.
  • Courses with a "C-" or better are transferred. Both the hours (credits) earned and the course itself will usually transfer. The grade does not transfer.
  • Courses that are considered general college courses, such as sociology, history, literature, art, etc., usually transfer. Developmental courses do not transfer credit.

Please note: Guilford is based on a four-credit-hour system. Three credit classes are accepted and will be given conversion credit when appropriate.
