How to Apply

When Should I Apply for Admission?

Early Action

Early Action admission means that Guilford College is one of your top choices for higher learning. Applying early action means that your application will be evaluated in the first round of admission decisions. You may be admitted, denied or deferred to the pool of candidates in the regular decision round. If you are admitted during the Early Action stage, you have until May 1, the common reply date, to inform Guilford if you will attend.

  • Early Action I for students planning to enter in August of 2013: Applications must be received by November 15, 2012 to receive notification in December.
  • Early Action II for students planning to enter in August of 2013: Applications must be received by January 15, 2013 to receive notification in February.

Student Admission Status

If your attendance at Guilford College is your first time at a tertiary institution AFTER secondary school, you are considered a first-year student or “freshman”.

Students who have attended a tertiary college or University in the U.S. or another country and now plan to attend Guilford College are considered “transfer students.”

How Does Guilford Make Admission Decisions?

The goal of the Guilford admission process is to select those international applications who will benefit most from a Guilford education and contribute significantly to the Guilford community. The admission committee thoroughly reviews each applicant to determine academic preparation as well as to evaluate other qualities such as leadership, creativity and school and community involvement.

For first-year students, we consider your coursework and grades, with the expectation that you will have at least four college-preparatory courses each year and the hope that you have challenged yourself with advanced courses where available. To the extent that we can, we also consider the level of competition in your secondary school. We will also consider all information available to us, including test scores, academic record, extracurricular activities, your personal essay and school recommendations from a counselor and a teacher.

For transfer students, we consider your most recent academic performance as an indicator of your preparation and readiness for the Guilford experience. The admission committee thoroughly reviews each applicant to determine academic preparation as well as to evaluate other qualities such as leadership, creativity and school and community involvement. To the extent that we can, we also consider the level of rigor at your previous college(s) or university(ies). We will also consider all information available to us, including test scores, academic record, extracurricular activities, your personal essay and Dean of Students form.
