Keeping Excellence Affordable

Guilford College, founded in 1837, has a long history of serving the educational goals of talented students from all over North Carolina - from the Blue Ridge to the Outer Banks. Now more than ever, financial assistance from Guilford is an important part of every family's strategy to meet the costs of Guilford's personal and high quality education for a lifetime.

To help all able students and their families make Guilford affordable, we are expanding our financial partnership in education with the State of North Carolina. North Carolina is home to Guilford, and we want to make every effort to serve our people, our community, our state.

Guilford College therefore is making available new funds and new services to students across the state. We call this effort the North Carolina Initiative. We are pleased to offer three new programs to help students and their families become part of the Guilford family:

Matching The North Carolina Legislative Tuition Grant (NCLTG)

This year $3,900 will be awarded to every North Carolina resident who enrolls as a traditional full-time student at Guilford College and who qualifies for the State Funded NCLTG. This matching grant provides tuition relief that will vary in amount with the amount of the state grant, now $1,950. This provides a total award of $3,900 above and beyond any other financial aid or scholarship.

Adding Dorothy Ragsdale McMichael Need-Based Awards

This year, all North Carolina students who qualify for admission and receive need-based aid also will receive a Guilford College-funded aid package enhanced through the generosity of contributors to the Dorothy Ragsdale McMichael Scholarship Fund. Students will receive between $500 to $1,500 per year, depending upon their need.

The GOAL - The Guilford Opportunity Alternative Loan

Provides Needed Funds and Reduces the Loan Burden on Qualified Students:

Reducing the burden of loan debt is one more way that Guilford College can help students and their families take advantage of a Guilford education. Students receiving financial assistance now can take advantage of a special loan program that focuses on reducing cumulative debt that students may carry.

The Guilford Opportunity Alternative Loan (The GOAL) is a loan for traditional campus students that are residents of North Carolina and a student-achievement program that both supports students while at Guilford and reduces their payback requirements after graduation.

The GOAL provides loans - worth a minimum of $2,500 per year - to students needing substantial financial assistance from Guilford, federal and other sources. Students who graduate with a cumulative grade-point average of 2.65 or greater can CANCEL 35 PERCENT of the amount they borrowed. There is a 6 month grace period before the student starts paying back the GOAL loan.

The GOAL loans are available for only eight semester.
