Admitted Student News

Congratulations on your admission to Guilford!

On your first days at Guilford you’ll encounter a community of teaching and learning that may be different than anything you have encountered up to this point in your life. Guilford is a Quaker college, one of only two listed in Loren Pope’s Colleges That Change Lives. At Guilford, teaching and learning are approached in different and creative ways.  Here are some Guilfordians’ first-person insights into what you’ll experience in and out of the classroom. Want to experience a Guilford class yourself? Schedule a visit.

Comprehensive

Julia Draper ’15
Tallahassee, FL

“Guilford’s small class sizes allows us to have a comprehensive and personalized learning experience. We have a say in subject material and have the flexibility to thoroughly dissect any particularly challenging concept through class discussion, we enjoy the freedom to dive to a depth of learning. There’s always a focus on interdisciplinary learning and an encouragement of diverse viewpoints.”
Thought

Blade Cruikshank ’14
Shelby, NC

"Even basic, introductory level classes have tremendous value and have taught me amazing things that I did not imagine before I took the class.”
Personal

Faris El-Ali ’14
Charlotte, NC

“I believe the word “personal” would best describe the education I am receiving here at Guilford College mainly because of the unique approach our professors take–we’re on a first-name basis with them, because of the College’s Quaker traditions, and they expect us to take responsibility for our learning, not just to sit and listen.”
Imagination

Steve Shapiro, Professor of Physics

“Guilford students come up with the most amazing creative solutions to problems. The less formal direction I give to my students, the more imaginative their solutions and the more they learn to trust in their ability to think and solve complicated problems. As a teacher, I am fascinated by my students’ abilities and ideas; their creativity and intelligence encourages me to be as imaginative as I can in my teaching style and in the projects that I assign.”
Diverse

Sarita Fernandez ’13
Rhode Island

“Apart from diversity being one of the core values here at Guilford, through daily interactions with classmates and professors, one begins to appreciate how diverse Guilford really is. Students are encouraged to talk, participate, and share their diverse opinions no matter how bizarre, silly, or brilliant they may seem!”
Excellence

Kyle Dell, Professor of Political Science

“Professors at Guilford have a goal of creating the most intensive, productive, experiential, student-focused teaching and learning environment possible. Students will be challenged to question assumptions, develop rigorous evidence, critically assess the work of others, and create work that makes the world a better place.”
Personal

Ken Gilmore, Professor of Political Science

“It starts on the first day, when I learn the student’s name, the place she calls home, her proudest accomplishments, her highest aspirations in life. From then on, the courses she takes, the skills she develops, the internships, study abroad and other experiences she undertakes, are focused on fulfilling those aspirations. It’s our personal commitment to every student.”
Equality

Mike MacVane ’14
Hampton Falls, New Hampshire

“Most of our classrooms are set up in a circle and the professors ask for as many viewpoints as they give. It creates an atmosphere where all students feel empowered to voice their thoughts and opinions in an equal setting.”
Innovative

Melanie Lee-Brown, Professor of Biology

“Our classes are powerful, meaningful, thought-provoking…invoking the student to not just learn information but to envision it, integrate it, apply it and live it. Changing the world means being what you learn.”
