Quantitative Literacy Requirement

The Quantitative Literacy requirement can be fulfilled in any of the following ways:

  1. Score a minimum of 650 on the Math SAT

  2. Pass a Quantitative Literacy Test given by Guilford College
A Quantitative Literacy Test is given during Orientation for the Fall Semester for all entering students. Since the test provides information useful for course placement, each entering student should take the test during Orientation. The test is given on a regular basis during the academic year. Interested students can discover these date by consulting the Quantitative Literacy webpage on the Guilford website. Once on the Guilford College, students should search for "Quantitative Literacy".

  3. Pass the Quantitative Literacy Course offered by Guilford College
A two credit, pass/fail course -- General Studies 110: Quantitative Literacy will be offered each Fall and Spring Semester. NOTE: Students should take the Quantitative Literacy Test before enrolling in the course. If staffing and student demand permits, the course may also be offered in the Summer Session.

  4. Pass any Guilford College Mathematics Course
Students with a minimal background in mathematics should take Math 110: Math for the Liberal Arts, and Elementary Education majors should take Math 103: Math for Elementary School Teachers. Both of these courses teach quantitative literacy skills, and do not require the passing of the Quantitative Literacy Test as a prerequisite. All other Mathematics courses assume quantitative literacy and require passing the Quantitative Literacy Test as a prerequisite. NOTE: Courses satisfying the Explorations: Natural Sciences requirement have quantitative skills as prerequisites.

  5. Receive Transfer Credit for a Mathematics Course that is Equivalent to a Course Taught by the Guilford College Mathematics Department
Many of the mathematics courses taught at other colleges, particularly those titled various levels of "Algebra" are NOT equivalent to Guilford courses. Also, "Statistics" courses taken in a department other than a mathematics department are generally not judged to be equivalent to Math 112: Elementary Statistics. Students may receive elective credit for such courses, but still do not satisfy the Quantitative Literacy requirement. Students who believe that their transfer course has provided them with quantitative skills can demonstrate this by taking the Quantitative Literacy Test at their first opportunity. Students who believe their transfer course is comparable to a Guilford College Mathematics class should consult with the chairperson of the Mathematics Department if they have any questions.

Waiver of the Quantitative Literacy Requirement

Students with documented learning differences that make it impossible for them to perform quantitative skills may have the requirement waived. Documentation is first certified by the Coordinator of Disability Services , then a petition for waiver is submitted to the Disability Services Committee for approval. Appeals are also brought to the Associate Academic Dean. Waivers are likely to be very rare.
