Health Professions, Physical Therapy

Admission Requirements

Although admission requirements vary greatly for specific schools, many physical therapy programs require the following courses:

  • Biology 114 (Zoology)
  • Biology 341 and 342 (Human Anatomy and Physiology)
  • Chemistry 111 (General)
  • Chemistry 112
  • Math 112 (Statistics)
  • Math 121 (Calculus)
  • Physics 211 or 121 (General)
  • Physics 212 or 122
  • Psychology 100 (General)

Additional course requirements in English, the Humanities and the Social Sciences are usually satisfied by completing Guilford's Foundations, Explorations, and Capstone requirements. A minimum of two years of undergraduate work is required. As long as students complete the above requirements, they may pursue the undergraduate major of their choice.

Recommendations

First-hand experience in the field of physical therapy is essential to a successful application. This may be accomplished through an internship, summer employment or volunteer work.

Two courses in Psychology are required by many programs.

It is highly recommended that students investigate the requirements of graduate programs in physical therapy that they want to apply to in order to make sure they complete the requirements (which differ from program to program) in a timely fashion.

GRE

Graduate programs in Physical Therapy require the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Information about test dates and application materials can be obtained from www.gre.org.

Application Process

Students should review the admissions requirement and application process at the graduate programs in physical therapy they are interested in attending. There is no centralized application for physical therapy programs. If you have questions, please contact Anne Glenn FFSC 311.
