Major Course Work

For a description of the Sociology / Anthropology (Grad School Track) major, see the Guilford College catalog.

Electives

Electives should be worked out very carefully between the student and adviser, so that, the best preparation possible is acquired for the GRE and graduate work itself. This means that individual programs will vary by intended types of graduate schools and specialties. As much theoretical orientation as possible in at least one social science in addition to sociology/anthropology is suggested. It is also suggested that students interested in the field of sociology take as much in the way of statistics as possible, ideally with a solid calculus background, and become proficient in the use of computers.

NOTES:

  • Students should be aware that an overall 3.00 QPA in all courses and a 3.50 QPA. in the major is minimal for admission to a quality graduate school. Below these levels, admission is likely to be conditional, if given at all; and fellowships, assistantships, and other aids are next to impossible to get. Graduate School education should be planned as is any other career choice.
  • It is strongly suggested that students undertake as much independent study as possible, so as, to become comfortable with procedures, research techniques, the mechanics of writing a research paper, etc. One should expect to write a master's thesis. Even though the student may take a non-thesis master's program, his or her preparation should not be limited to that expectation.
  • An Internship is also strongly recommended
