International Studies

Major Course Work

For a description of the International Studies major, see the Guilford College catalog.

The International Studies (IS) major aims to develop qualities of flexibility and open-mindedness, an appreciation of cultural diversity, and an understanding of the roots of international issues. The major enables students to learn more about the world and contemporary issues, as well as to develop expertise in one of four geographic regions: Africa, East Asia, Europe, and Latin America. In addition to international/global courses, students take area studies courses in the culture, history, language, and contemporary social, political, and economic systems of one region and study abroad in that same region. IS majors are encouraged to attend a variety of campus co-curricular programs sponsored by International Studies.

  • The International Studies major is a double or joint major, and requires that students pursue a second disciplinary major.
  • Students should contact the International Studies Director as soon as possible for assistance with planning and scheduling.
  • Students interested in an International Studies major can pursue an in-depth, interdisciplinary study of a single geographical region or country. Students focus their course work, language study, and Study Abroad program on one geographical region -- Africa, East Asia, Europe, or Latin America.
  • FOR FIRST YEAR AND SOPHOMORE STUDENTS appropriate International Studies courses include: SOAN 103: Cultural Anthropology; HIST 150: World History; PSCI 103: International Relations; ECON 221 (with Robert Williams); and language study.

NOTE: Concentrations in African, East Asian, and Latin American Studies are also available. See the section on concentrations in this handbook.
