German Studies

Major Course Work

A minimum of eight courses (32 credit hours) above 102 is required for the major. German 202 (Intermediate German II) is a prerequisite for all 300-level courses, and one-300 level course is a prerequisite for all 400-level courses. Up to three German Studies courses taught in English may count toward the major. At least one 400 Seminar course is required. The optional Senior Thesis does not replace the Seminar. Major coursework may include Intermediate German I 201; Intermediate German II 202; Contemporary German Culture 310; German Youth Culture 311; Advanced German Composition 312 (Munich); Culture and Society: The Weimar Republic 320; Political Science 250 (Politics and Culture of Bavaria, Munich); Art History 450 (Munich); History 450 (History of Modern Germany, Munich); Seminar 400 (repeatable); Independent Study 260, 360, or 460, and Senior Thesis 470.

A German Studies major is required to participate in the Semester Abroad Program in Munich. There are two assessment exams required for a German Studies major. Students take an exam at the end of German 202, consisting of grammar and literary analysis. They will be advised on areas of concern, if any, and will have the opportunity to re-take the exam before their last 400-level course. As part of their last 400-level course, students will write an essay demonstrating their knowledge of a chosen topic as it relates to German culture and literature.
