French

Major Course Work

A minimum of eight courses (32 credit hours) above 102 is required for the major, including French 220 (Intermediate Conversation and Composition) and French 400 (Senior Seminar). The optional Senior Thesis does not replace the Senior Seminar. French 220 is a prerequisite for all 300- and 400- level courses. Students must take French 310, 311, or 315 before enrolling in higher-level courses. Major coursework may include Intermediate French 201; Introduction to Literary and Cultural Analysis 220; Contemporary France 310; Francophone World 311; French and Francophone Cinema 315; Literature and Culture, Period 365; Literature and Culture, Theme 375; Literature and Culture, Genre 385; Senior Seminar 400, Independent Study 260, 360, or 460, and Senior Thesis 470.

A major is required to participate in a pre-approved study abroad program in a Francophone country, such as those in Paris or Rennes, or elsewhere in the Francophone world. (Approval of the department is necessary to waive this requirement.)

There are two assessment exams required for a French major. Students take an exam at the end of French 220, consisting of grammar and literary analysis. They will be advised on areas of concern, if any, and will have the opportunity to re-take the exam before their last 400-level course. As part of their last 400-level course, students will prepare an annotated bibliography on a topic of their choice, as well as write an essay demonstrating their knowledge of this topic as it relates to French and Francophone culture and literature.
