Health Professions, Dentistry

Admission Requirements

Although admission requirements vary slightly for specific schools, most dental schools require the following courses:

  • Chemistry 111 (General)
  • Chemistry 112
  • Chemistry 231 (Organic)
  • Chemistry 232 and 235
  • Two college-level Mathematics courses.
  • Biology 213 (Cell Biology)
  • Physics 212 or 122
  • Physics 211 or 121 (General)

Additional course requirements in English, the Humanities and the Social Sciences are usually satisfied by completing Guilford College's Foundations, Explorations, and Capstone requirements. A minimum of three years of undergraduate work is required. As long as students complete the above requirements, they may pursue the undergraduate major of their choice.

Recommendations

  1. Predental students should take Chemistry 111 and Chemistry 112 in their first year.
  2. Biochemistry is highly recommended by many dental schools as an elective course.
  3. First-hand experience in the field of dentistry is highly desirable. This may be accomplished through an internship, summer employment and volunteer work.

The DAT Exam

Students wishing to apply to Dental School must take the Dental Admissions Test (DAT). It is recommended that they take this exam in the April or May of their Junior year. Information about the DAT and study review materials are available from Anne Glenn, FFSC 311 and the ADA website: http://www.ada.org/prof/ed/testing/dat/index.asp

Application Process

Predental students should complete and submit their dental school applications during the summer between their Junior and Senior year. Most dental schools subscribe to the online American Association of Dental Schools Application Service (AADSAS). The online AADSAS application can be found at https://aadsas.adea.org/ or contact Anne Glenn, FFSC 311 for further information.
