Chemistry Joint Major
Chemistry is complementary to study in biology, geology and physics, and the department welcomes joint majors. A joint major should be planned in consultation with both departments the student wishes to major in. The Chemistry Department expects that joint majors in chemistry will take at least 26 credits in chemistry, fulfill at least the Physics and Math course requirements for the Chemistry A.B. degree, and take CHEM 400 Chemistry Seminar. The joint major must be approved by both departments and the Associate Academic Dean. Below are some suggested courses for students who wish to plan a joint major in chemistry and either biology, geology or physics:
Joint with Biology
CHEM 111, Chemical Principles I; CHEM 112, Chemical Principles II, CHEM 231, Organic Chemistry I; CHEM 232, Organic Chemistry II; CHEM 235 Integrated Laboratory I; CHEM 331, Physical Chemistry: Thermodynamics and Kinetics and/or CHEM 341: Instrumental Analysis; CHEM 430, Medicinal Chemistry and/or CHEM 434, Biochemistry
Joint with Physics
CHEM 111, Chemical Principles I; CHEM 112, Chemical Principles II; CHEM 231, Organic Chemistry I; CHEM 331, Physical Chemistry: Thermodynamics and Kinetics; CHEM 332, Physical Chemistry: Quantum Mechanics and Spectroscopy; CHEM 341, Instrumental Analysis and/or CHEM 342, Inorganic and Materials Chemistry. (Note: CHEM 336: Integrated Laboratory for Physical Chemistry is a corequisite of CHEM 332, and CHEM 345: Integrated Laboratory for Inorganic Chemistry is a corequisite of CHEM 342.)
Joint with Geology
CHEM 111, Chemical Principles I; CHEM 112, Chemical Principles II; CHEM 231, Organic Chemistry I; CHEM 331, Physical Chemistry : Thermodynamics and Kinetics; CHEM 341, Instrumental Analysis; CHEM 342, Inorganic and Materials Chemistry and/or Geology 412, Geochemistry. (Note: CHEM 345: Integrated Laboratory for Inorganic Chemistry is a corequisite of CHEM 342.)
