Advising Advice
Some advice on good advising...
Course Planning
Outline a semester by semester registration plan that distributes required general education courses and major courses throughout a student's planned time at Guilford. Departmental suggestions for when specific courses should be taken (see sections on FIRST YEAR ADVISORS, MAJORS, or CONCENTRATIONS in this advisors handbook), or the online BannerWeb Degree Evaluation option, may be utilized for this planning. Make sure to consider Study Abroad, summer school courses, internships, and special topic offerings so that the plan is flexible.
Selection of the Major
- Encourage your advisees to select their major early in their academic careers, with due attention to their interests and aptitudes.
- Be aware that some majors need to be started in the first year if the student wishes to graduate "on-time."
- Students should declare her/his major by the end of her/his sophomore year.
Grade Reports
Student grades are available to advisers and students through Banner Web. Access to Banner Web requires a user ID number and a pin number.
Repeated Courses
Credit for a course is awarded only one time even if the course is repeated. However, the grade is included in the GPA calculation each time a course is attempted
Physical Education Activity Courses
A maximum of 4 Physical Education (PHYE 100 level) activity courses may be applied towards graduation requirements. Note: only three of these credits may be awarded from the same (repeated) activity.
Graduation
Remind students during the year that they expect to graduate that they are not eligible to participate in graduation ceremonise until and unless they have applied for graduation by the published deadline, completed all course requirements, cleared their account in the Office of Student Accounts, have no judicial holds, and paid any library fines.
