Study Abroad: Travel Tips
Planning Your Trip
Guilford faculty and staff provide substantive orientation programs for all Guilford-led programs. Students who participate in Guilford-affiliated programs receive assistance from our partner providers. These orientation programs include information about booking your airline flights, traveling in-country or nearby, culture and customs, and making the most of your time abroad.
Passports and Visas
Valid passports are now required for travel to any destination outside the United States and its territories. Some countries also require visas, depending upon your length of stay or your purpose. If you already have a passport, it needs to be valid for at least six months beyond the last day of your program. The Study Abroad office (336-316-2125) maintains up-to-date information about these regulations, and instructions about obtaining a passport will be included in the program orientation.
Information about passports may be found at the travel section of the US State Department website .
Vaccinations, Medical Care, and Insurance
The College cannot provide the same medical care for students on overseas programs that it can for students on campus. Past experience with foreign study programs indicates that good health care can be readily obtained in each of the countries visited.
If a program requires a pre-departure vaccination program, students will be informed about this during orientation.
Program leaders and on-site providers have knowledge about local medical care. Each program collects student medical information and authorization to proceed with treatment for emergency situations. If time permits, leaders may consult with parents or guardians.
All students must provide proof of medical insurance to be eligible for study abroad. One such policy is available through the College. Certain programs include additional health insurance package options; information regarding these is distributed to students once they are accepted into a program.
