Year in Japan

The Program in Tokyo

Because of its firm commitment to intercultural studies as an integral part of a liberal arts education, Guilford College has established an exchange program with International Christian University in Tokyo. Each year, one or two well-qualified Guilford students are guaranteed admission to International Christian University for a full academic year. International Christian University was established by a group of Japanese and North American Christian leaders who were interested in ways of reconciling Japan and the United States following the war. The university is dedicated to "the ideals of peace, democracy and internationalism" and it holds a place of academic distinction in Japan.

International Christian University has a beautiful wooded campus with a view of Mt. Fuji in the distance. Central Tokyo is an hour away by public transportation. From there, Japan's superb rail system extends throughout the country.

The cost of a year at International Christian University is roughly equivalent to an academic year at Guilford, but subject to fluctuation due to inflation and currency exchange rates. All federal, state and college financial assistance, with the exception of work-study funds, is applicable to a year in Japan.
