" Good Americans, when they die, go to Paris." –Thomas Appleton

The Program in Paris

More than the City of Light, more than the cultural and political heart of Old Europe, Paris is at the center--intellectual, political and cultural--of a rapidly evolving continent. From Notre Dame, the Louvre, and the Champs Elysées to the new Opéra de la Bastille, Grande Arche de la Défense, and the Pyramide du Louvre. Paris combines the old and the new into a vibrant, elegant, and intriguing city.

In Paris, Guilford students join with students from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington, the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and other North Carolina schools. An on-site resident director provides leadership for the program.

The students are enrolled in a program in French language that is responsive to the needs of students at different levels of language competence. By taking courses at the Sorbonne and living in the city, students are immersed in the Parisian experience.

Requirements

Students must complete French 102 (or the equivalent of two semesters of college-level French) before enrolling in the Paris semester. Successful applicants will usually have completed additional courses in French.

Courses

Following a group orientation program, students take up residence with a French family selected by the resident director. The group will pursue courses offered in English by faculty in France, focusing on art,  literature, and contemporary French society.

Expenses

The basic cost of the Semester in Paris is usually the equivalent of full residential semester at Guilford , plus airfare. (Unfavorable exchange rates may require the addition of a surcharge in order to maintain the quality of the program). This includes all instruction, fees at the Sorbonne, housing, subway cards, and orientation. Additional expenses will depend upon your own preferences. All federal, state, and college financial assistance, with the exception of work-study funds, is applicable to the semester in Paris. The program is available during the fall and spring semesters.
