Personal Statement:
"Like many theatre educators, I have worked as a professional actor and director. Unlike many of my friends and colleagues at other colleges and universities, I consider myself first and foremost, a professional educator. Teaching is and always has been my first love.
Working in the professional theatre helps develop greater sophistication in terms of teaching strategy. Professional work holds one to a high standard and allows the testing of theory in the realm of actual practice. I have often revised the design of a class because of the lessons learned during a professional engagement. On some occasions the work introduces me to new ideas and methodologies which I take into the classroom. At other times, a less than ideal acting experience confirms my own deep seated beliefs about what it takes to make great theatre.
More importantly, I have found that academic and professional theatre pose the same challenges. In fact, I often find that students are more resourceful in meeting those challenges. They seek out multiple solutions to creative problems while some professionals go for the quick fix. Early on in my career, I thought of myself as "the one who transmits knowledge to young minds." I have come to understand that students are my best teachers. Much of my professional success is due to the lessons they have taught me.
In a business as challenging as theatre, burnout and cynicism are a constant threat. I wish to thank my students for infusing me with their tenacity, devotedness to the art, and exuberant idealism."
