Voice: Statement of Purpose
Voice Lessons are offered to all students interested in developing a healthy and productive vocal technique through the study of the "classical method" of singing. Singers are nurtured in an environment conductive to realization of personal talent and taught to honor and respect the unique qualities of each individual voice.
Aspiring performers are encouraged to enter area and national competitions and are given numerous performing opportunities as early as their first semester. Music majors perform weekly in repertoire classes and once or twice a year in master classes lead by visiting artists. Recent Master Classes included an Alexander Technique workshop. Guilford Students attend the annual National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) auditions and several student have advanced to the Regional level competitions.
It is expected that the students' understanding of music will be enriched by their immersion in the total liberal arts program and that they will grow not only as musicians but as scholars.
