Biography
Kami Rowan has taught at Guilford College in Greensboro, NC since 1993. Her duties include directing the guitar ensemble, instructing guitar majors, and teaching academic courses such as Music Appreciation, Music & Contemporary Culture, and Guitar Pedagogy & Literature. The Guilford College Guitar Ensemble has performed in Virginia, Illinois, South Carolina, Georgia, and plans to tour Ireland in the spring of 2009.
Kami is currently pursuing her Doctorate of Musical Arts in performance at Shenandoah Conservatory of Shenandoah University. She received a Master of Music degree in performance under the tutelage of Dr. Glenn Caluda from Shenandoah. Ms. Rowan studied with the renowned Aaron Shearer, at North Carolina School of the Arts, in Winston-Salem, NC, where she received her Bachelor of Music in performance. Kami received her NC-A Teaching Certificate from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and taught full-time for the Guilford County public schools for six years. She was part of the team that designed and put into operation the Weaver Center for Performing & Visual Arts, an options high school in Guilford County. Ms Rowan created and implemented a complete guitar curriculum for the high school level.
Kami is currently the president of the Piedmont Classic Guitar Society, a nonprofit organization providing community and professional opportunities for the North Carolina Piedmont area. Additionally, she has been a clinician and adjudicator for many guitar festivals and competitions on the east coast, including the Rantucci Guitar Competition & Festival, Loudoun County Schools All-County Guitar Festival, the Music Academy of North Carolinas Guitar Competition & Festival, and the Hawaii International Conference on Arts & Humanities. Ms. Rowan enjoys composing and performing, and is a member of the Winston-Salem Guitar Septet.
Kami guides students in the process of finding themselves through the guitar. She sees art as a tool for expression, self-awareness, and change. Ms. Rowan teaches a strong foundation of technique, which allows greater access to musicality and interpretation. She challenges each student to look within to find their strengths and improve their weaknesses. Kami’s past Guilford graduates are currently pursuing higher-level music degrees at institutions such as: University of Colorado, San Francisco Conservatory, Berklee School of Music, and Duquesne University. Her students have also taught for Guilford County public schools, worked for Teach for America, been successful in creating professional performing careers, and attended veterinarian school.
