General Information

Newly admitted College students may declare a major. All students who have been admitted to the College are eligible to major in JPS. It is advisable for students who have declared JPS as their major to discuss their academic and career plans with their advisor as soon as possible. All majors in JPS will be assigned a JPS faculty member as an advisor.

Transfer students may also declare JPS as a major upon admittance to the College. Transfer students should contact the Chair of JPS to discuss academic concerns and career plans. Transfer students should bring a copy of their college transcript with them as well as form from the registrar's office indicating how the credits have been transfered into the College.

Advisement

At the initial interview, the JPS advisor will discuss the Departmental requirements with the new student. In addition, the discussion will include how other course offered by the JPS and other academics departments of the will benefit the student. Assistance with registration forms and other individualized information can be discussed in this meeting. Advisors are assigned to students based upon apparent student interest and the number of advisees curently assigned to the advisor. Students may change advisors by requesting to a JPS faculty to become his/her advisor.

Students at Guilford College are not allowed to self-advise. All students must be advised by the appropriate faculty member. Students wishing to add, drop, or change a course should see their assigned advisor. Faculty members are available during their posted office hours, or a student may make an individula appointment at time convenient to both parties.

Closed Classes

Students wishing to enter a closed course should see the individual instructor. Only the instructor will have the authority to allow additional students into his/her class. The signature must appear on a closed class form which must also be approved by the student's advisor. The form is then taken to the Registrar's office to complete the course enrollment process.

Graduation

Applications for graduation should be filed in the Registrar's Office one semester before the semester the student is to graduate.
